We have some exciting news! Andrew (and William as his TA) will be teaching a wonderful weekend class at Sawtooth School for Visual Art in the wonderful town of Winston-Salem, NC this October (10/11 - 10/13)! We happened to be passing through the area on the way to meet some friends the other day, and if you've never been there, it's really an amazing place with tons of character and amazing facilities! Andrew's class is called Explorations of Color on Metal, and it's going to be a three-day intensive on hot and cold techniques to add color to metal pieces. Here's a little more information:
Color is such a powerful tool for any artist! Join professional mixed media artist/metalsmith Andrew Thornton in this fascinating exploration of color on metal. This workshop will introduce you to both hot and cold applications to add color to your metal work. On Day One we will discuss how to prepare your metal for success and cover several different cold applications, including using colored pencils, paint, and lots more. On Day Two we will delve into hot applications, including an introduction to powder coating and vitreous enamel. On Day Three, your creativity will be unleashed and we will work with the techniques from the previous days. With Andrew's guidance and inspiration, you will create over 12 different samples and will have personalized instruction on how to achieve your color on metal goals! Metals experience is encouraged, but this workshop is designed for all levels, both beginners and long-time makers.
A bit more from Andrew: "A student reached out to me and asked if the workshop was the right fit for her… and I think all educational opportunities are worthy and full of insight, even if it is confirmation that what you’re doing the way you’re doing it is already perfect for where you’re at. (For instance, I took a power hammer class on making spatulas… this isn’t something that I will use on a daily basis, but it is something that I wanted to do and I did it! Plus I have a really cool piece that I use on a daily basis that reminds me that I did something that I didn’t think was possible.) I really do believe that workshops are more than just the learning of a new skill, but the building of community and confidence. It’s empowering to be in an environment geared solely towards the making of things… translating ideas into reality.
